Bagno Sasso received the international red dot design award best of the best for the concrete washstand, “Wedge”, in 2007. The red dot design award is an internationally-renowned award presented by the Design Centre Nordrhein Westfalen. The works of these outstandingly creative designers receive the recognition that they truly deserve. As observed at most specialised awards ceremonies, the red dot design award is decided by a jury consisting of numerous experts. Only works, which are significantly connected with the design, are presented with the award. There is a differentiation between works, which receive the red dot and those, which additionally receive the best of the best. Those awarded with red dots are extremely good pieces of work, which can only be surpassed by a best of the best work.

At least once a year, such an awarded work is exhibited at the so-called “red dot design museum” in Essen, the city in the centre of Germany’s Ruhr. Peter Zec, who has also been designated by the WirtschaftsWoche magazine in 2006 as one of “20 creative lateral thinkers, who have changed the faces of their company or created a completely new brand”, is responsible for creating this award. The father of three children, Zec was born in 1956, and is currently a professor of business communications, a communications and design consultant, as well as an author and publisher.

It must not go unmentioned that the renowned award is presented in three categories: product design, communication design, and design concept. The oldest category is product design, as this category has been in existence since 1955, whereby the award is still known as design innovation before it was re-named red dot award: product design in 2000. The designation, red dot, was taken directly from practice, as a good product design is marked with a red dot. In 1993, the communications category followed, whereby this award only takes place in November or December. The youngest of the three categories, the design concept, was introduced in 2005. Ken Koo is chiefly responsible for this award, which is also the reason why it is organised by the red dot design museum in Singapore. Lastly, it is important to mention that the design team of the year has been annually awarded in the product design category since 1988.
